Eliminating Mold on Concrete
Concrete can be found all around your home in the form of walls, patios, and more. While concrete can provide more durability than bricks, it is usually more prone to water seepage that can cause extensive damage and permit mold growth. This month, we will examine the treatment options for mold growth on concrete and how you can prevent it in the future.
Removing Mold From Concrete
When it comes to cleaning mold off of concrete, you have a few options. First, you can mix a cup of bleach and a gallon of water. From here, either wipe or spray the mixture on the impacted areas and let it sit. If the mold is on an outdoor surface, you can wash the solution away with a pressure washer. Likewise, if you are indoors, you can use a brush to scrub the mold. You should wear a mask during this process so you don’t inhale mold particles or bleach, regardless of the method you choose.
If you would prefer a less intense approach, vinegar should work against most types of mold. Just repeat the process mentioned above but use a cup of vinegar in place of bleach. With both removal options, be aware that these solutions can corrode colored concrete finishes.
Lastly, you can use ammonia. Simply apply it to the moldy surface and watch as it will tear through the mold. You shouldn’t need to scrub anything either, making this a great option for older homeowners. Once the ammonia has done its job, spray it with a hose to wash everything away. Be sure to dilute the ammonia, recommendations should be on the packaging, and properly ventilate the area.
Preventing Mold Growth on Concrete
There are a few simple precautions you can take to keep your concrete mold-free. Perhaps the easiest measure is keeping the concrete clean. Sweep/wipe down your concrete to remove dirt, water, and other debris to prevent any buildup that could support mold growth. If you have walls made out of concrete blocks in the garage or basement, you can run a dehumidifier to increase ventilation and lower the risk of mold.
